Last night I got home starving and didn't feel like cooking (since it required shopping first) or really going out. I promise I'll try No. 7 (sometimes referred to in comments here as 7 Greene) soon, but the last time I went there it was closed, remember? Anyway, I started browsing through the Google map and realized I'd never tried Five Spot Soul Food. Everyone in the area knows this place - it's really hard to miss with its gigantic front on Myrtle - but I'd never actually gone in or ordered. I went to their website and was delighted to see that they delivered. And they deliver beer! How great is that?
I ordered a smothered fried chicken platter with red beans and rice along with a 6-pack. It was awesome, but (and I knew this was going to happen when I ordered it) I felt pretty violated afterward. This is not food for the feint of heart. Nosir.
The question remains whether, in the same situation again, I'd order from Five Spot or Ruthies? I think I liked Ruthie's food a little more, but getting beer with dinner was pretty awesome. It's worth noting as well that the food showed up in less than 20 minutes, which was pretty great.

The one and only time I ordered from 5 Spot was a disaster. I had friends over, and we ordered four different entrees. After 45 minutes, I called to check in on our food, and was told it was out for delivery. Another 40 minutes later, I called again, and was told the same thing. I told them that if it had really been out for delivery for 40 minutes, it would be really cold, but they assured me it wouldn't be the case. When it finally arrived, ANOTHER 20 minutes later (almost 2 hours after I'd ordered), it was not only cold, but half of our order was wrong. And then the icing on the cake was that when I refused to pay for it, the owner called the cops on me.
Needless to say, that was the only time I've ever ordered from them. Buyer beware!
The smoke joint also delivers and will deliver beer. I think they're waaay better than 5 spot. I've found 5 spots quality to be spotty. Not so at Smoke Joint!
When I'm in the mood for soul, I stay the hell away from the Five Spot! When it first opened up I was psyched. The only other place around was Ruthies and though okay, it wasnt all that great. I have eaten there on and off but after the last three times of undercooked BLOODY chicken thigh, hard crusty mac and cheese, sour bitter watery collard greens and a stale velvet cake...forget it..no more chances :o( There's an OUTSTANDING soul food restaurant on Atlantic, right off of Court that though out of the way is well worth it! Stay away from the Five Spot if your looking to fill that particular hankerin...
Snooz, it took you three bloody chicken thighs before you realized the place is a shambles?
