Is Grimaldi's Really This Good?
On Saturday, the Little Miss and I ended up in Dumbo, walking the dog around on an overcast, absolutely frigid day. We made it down near the waterfront where the Rive Cafe is, and passed by Grimaldi's, which I've heard is among the best pizza in New York. It must be, because there was a line down the block to get in. It was cold enough that waiting in that line could not have been fun.
So is Grimaldi's really that good? I'll get down there some time when I won't turn into a foodiecicle while I'm waiting to get in the building.

I've had Grimadldi's quite a few times. I've only eaten in the restaurant once. They are surprisingly surly considering they are a pizza place. Just be prepared to be looked down upon by your server.
As far as the pizza goes, it is very good. It is classic woodfired pizza with fresh ingredients. You'll get chummy with fellow patrons because they pack the guests in nice and tight. I happen to like that sort of atmosphere, so it isn't a drawback for me.
Grimaldi's is fabulous. Super fresh and pretty fast. It is true you get lost in there with your waiter, end up overhearing annoying tourist's conversations due to the close proximity. But the guy with the grey hair, the one seating you is really nice and hospitible...and ends up giving me a very awkward back rub everytime i go in there.....
Awkward back rubs complement any dining experience. I'm there.

I live in DUMBO and Grimaldi's is a good pizza, but not nearly as good as the lines would suggest. It's an above-average neighborhood place but not much more.
Even if lines were no issue, I would prefer DiFaras, Lucali's [on Henry] or Arturros [in the city]. And that's off the top of my head.
So, when easy Grimaldi's is a good pie. But not worth any decent effort.
